Cosmetic Manufacturer Sydney
Cosmetic Manufacturer Sydney
Sydney founders manufacture with Epilab — Melbourne cosmetic contract manufacturer serving NSW brands with overnight freight, GMP-aligned production and 500-unit MOQs.
Sydney is the largest beauty market in Australia. It’s also the city with the most local manufacturer options — which makes the “Sydney vs interstate manufacturer” decision a common one for NSW founders. This page explains how Epilab works specifically with Sydney-based brands, the operational reality of working with a Melbourne manufacturer, and how to think about the choice.
The honest framing
We are not a Sydney-based manufacturer. Our facility is in Melbourne. So why do Sydney founders use us?
The short answer: location-of-manufacturer matters less than founders assume, and a lot less than the typical “find a local manufacturer” advice suggests.
Freight from Melbourne to Sydney is one business day via standard courier. Formulation development happens over video calls and sample shipments — exactly the same workflow whether the founder is in Surry Hills or Mosman or down the road from our lab. Documentation, batch records, and stability data are delivered electronically. Production sign-off uses retained samples we ship to you.
The Sydney founders who work with us aren’t choosing us despite the distance. They’re choosing us because the manufacturer-fit (MOQ flexibility, formulation capability, documentation discipline, communication style) mattered more than geography.
How working with Epilab works for Sydney brands
Initial brief. Email info@epilab.com.au with a short outline: product category, target volume, timeline, any specific compliance requirements. We respond with the questions we need answered to scope the project. This happens over email and video calls.
Formulation development. Once a brief is locked in, formulation rounds begin. Each round produces samples that ship overnight from Melbourne to your Sydney address. You evaluate, send feedback, and we iterate. Typical formulation development runs 3-6 rounds depending on category complexity.
Sign-off and production lock. Once samples meet your specification, formulation is locked. From this point the formula goes into production mode. We send you the signed-off documentation; you don’t need to be physically present.
Production. Batches run at our Melbourne facility under GMP-aligned standards. Batch records, certificates of analysis, and finished sample retention all happen on our end. Typical production-to-finished-stock window is 4-8 weeks depending on category and packaging lead times.
Dispatch. Once production is complete, finished stock is typically ready the next business day. Most Sydney clients arrange their own freight via a preferred carrier. We can also arrange a standard courier for you. Standard Melbourne-to-Sydney transit on commercial freight is 1-2 business days.
The operational difference between this workflow and using a Sydney-based manufacturer is minor. The transit time on finished goods is 1-2 days longer. Everything else is identical.
When a Sydney-based manufacturer makes more sense
We don’t claim to be the right fit for every Sydney brand. There are situations where a NSW-based manufacturer genuinely makes more sense:
- You want to be on the production floor for first-batch runs and visit weekly during development.
- You’re sourcing specialty packaging that’s only available through a Sydney-based supplier and want it shipped direct to a local manufacturer to save freight legs.
- You’re working with a NSW-based formulator already and want production close to that relationship.
- Your supply chain is tightly clustered in NSW (Sydney warehouse, NSW couriers, NSW retail accounts) and the overnight Melbourne-to-Sydney freight leg adds meaningful complexity.
If none of those apply, the location question is mostly cosmetic.

The Sydney market context
Sydney’s beauty market has a few characteristics worth flagging for first-time founders.
Higher retail expectations. Sydney’s pharmacy and department-store buyers tend to set the highest bar in the country for finished product documentation, stability data, and ingredient declaration. Whichever manufacturer you choose, the documentation discipline matters more for Sydney-stocked brands than for purely DTC ones. We’ve supplied brands listed in major Sydney pharmacy networks and the documentation we produce meets those requirements.
Competitive launch environment. Sydney has more new beauty brands launching per month than any other Australian city. Differentiation tends to matter more than price. The brands we’ve worked with most successfully out of Sydney have strong product positioning, not just strong margins.
Founder time pressure. A lot of Sydney founders are running brand work alongside full-time roles in adjacent industries (fashion, media, finance). Our experience is that founders with limited daily time benefit from a manufacturer who can move work forward without constant input — which is part of what we optimise for.
Frequently asked questions
Do you ever come up to Sydney for meetings?
Generally formulation development and brief discussions happen via video. For brands at scale, on-site visits in Sydney can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. We don’t have a Sydney office.
How long is freight from Melbourne to Sydney?
Overnight to 2 business days for samples via standard courier. 1-2 business days for finished stock on standard commercial freight. Express options are available if needed.
Are products manufactured at Epilab eligible for Australian Made claim?
Yes. Manufacturing happens at our Melbourne facility, which meets Australian Made & Owned criteria. Brands can apply for Australian Made certification on finished products.
Do you work with NSW-registered businesses for AICIS compliance?
AICIS (formerly NICNAS) is the federal Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme — it applies the same way regardless of which state your business is registered in. We support AICIS-compliant ingredient handling for all products we manufacture.
Can I see samples before committing to a brief?
We can usually share reference samples from existing categories so you can evaluate texture, finish, and quality before commissioning custom formulation. These ship to your Sydney address.
What’s the typical first-project timeline for a Sydney brand?
From signed brief to finished stock landed at your warehouse: 12-20 weeks for most categories.
