Epilab is an Australian body oil manufacturer specialising in custom, science-led formulation for indie and established beauty brands. Body oils are anhydrous (water-free), which makes them a completely different formulation discipline to a lotion: no emulsion to stabilise and little or no preservative, but oil oxidation and skin feel become the make-or-break factors. We’ve formulated 700+ products and manufacture for 100+ brand partners from our GMP-aligned Melbourne facility, in operation since 2011.

Body oil formulation at Epilab

A body oil lives or dies on two things: how it feels going on, and how well it holds up in the bottle. Because there’s no water phase, the craft is in the oil blend and the antioxidant system rather than in emulsion stability.

Ingredients we formulate with. We blend nourishing carrier oils (jojoba, sweet almond, macadamia, grapeseed, rosehip, marula) with fast-absorbing “dry” esters (caprylic/capric triglyceride, coco-caprylate) to tune the finish from rich to weightless. Oil-soluble actives and botanicals, vitamin E and other antioxidants for skin benefit and shelf life, and carefully dosed fragrance or essential oils complete the formula. Mica can be added for illuminating and shimmer oils.

Formats and textures. Lightweight dry oils, rich nourishing oils, illuminating shimmer oils, bath and massage oils, pregnancy and stretch-mark oils, and after-sun oils. All are filled into glass dropper bottles, pumps and mist sprayers. For most modern body oils the premium cue is a fast-absorbing, non-greasy dry-touch finish, and we formulate to hit it.

The hard parts we solve. Oxidation is the enemy of any oil product, so we design the antioxidant system, select stable oils, and recommend UV-protective or opaque glass to protect shelf life. Essential-oil fragrances are dosed to skin-safe (IFRA) limits. Shimmer needs to stay suspended rather than settling. And viscosity has to suit your dropper, pump or spray so the pack dispenses cleanly.

With no water phase, preservation is minimal, but oxidation and shelf life must be actively managed through oil choice, antioxidants and light-protective packaging. Essential oils bring natural positioning but carry safe-use limits. “Dry oil” absorption is a formulation outcome, not a marketing word. Glass packaging protects the oil but is a larger share of cost. Epilab manages these during development.
