Lip balm formulation at Epilab

Lip balm formulations range from simple beeswax-based traditional balms through to vegan plant-wax formulations, tinted balms, treatment balms with peptides and antioxidants, and overnight lip masks. Epilab works with beeswax alternatives (candelilla, carnauba, sunflower wax), plant butters (shea, cocoa, mango, kokum), plant oils, actives (vitamin E, peptides, plumping agents), and natural colourants.

What we offer for lip balm brands

Custom formulation from brief

Develop a unique lip balm formula from your brief. Active selection, texture profile, fragrance, ingredient sourcing, all built around your brand positioning. Development typically $5,000 to $9,000 per SKU. 8 to 16 weeks from approved brief to production-ready formula. You own the finished formulation under standard project terms.

Private label adaptation

Take a proven Epilab lip balm base and customise it with your fragrance, ingredient adjustments, and packaging. Setup cost $1,000 to $3,000 per SKU. Launch-ready in 4 to 8 weeks. The fastest path to market for founders who want to validate the category before investing in custom formulation.

White label (coming soon, from approximately 50 units)

For founders who want to test market response before committing to a full 500-unit pilot, our forthcoming white label range will start at approximately 50 units per SKU. Talk to us if you are interested in early access.

Minimum order quantities

500 units per SKU for jar, pot and stick-format lip balms. Tube-format lip balms have a 3,000 unit minimum due to tube-filling line setup. Multi-SKU launches can combine volumes across formats.

Common lip balm formulation considerations

Wax-to-butter ratio determines the texture (hard stick versus soft balm versus slip-and-glide). Tinted lip balms need pigment dispersion expertise to avoid streaking. Vegan formulations require structured wax alternatives to replicate beeswax behaviour. Flavour and fragrance loading needs to consider lip-edge sensitivity. SPF-claiming lip products: SPF 15 cosmetic-class only at Epilab; primary SPF above 15 requires a TGA-licensed manufacturer.

Realistic lip balm project costs

For a single-SKU lip balm launch in Australia in 2026:

  • Custom formulation development: $5,000 to $9,000 per SKU
  • Private label adaptation: $1,000 to $3,000 per SKU
  • Stability testing: $800 to $1,500 per SKU
  • Preservative efficacy testing: $1,000 to $1,500 where applicable
  • Packaging: typically 30 to 40 percent of total launch cost
  • Production at 500-unit pilot: per-unit cost roughly 20 to 30 percent above the 3,000-unit price

A realistic single-SKU lip balm boutique launch typically lands between $25,000 and $50,000 total. Full cost breakdown in our cost transparency guide.
