Epilab is an Australian lip balm manufacturer specialising in custom, science-led formulation for indie and established beauty brands. Lip balm is a small product with outsized commercial pull: low unit cost, high repurchase, and a natural fit for gifting, multipacks and impulse retail. But it’s anhydrous, applied to the lips and effectively ingested, so it has to be formulated with real care. A good lip balm is a balance of structure and slip: hard enough to hold its shape and apply cleanly, soft enough to glide, and stable enough to survive a pocket or a car in an Australian summer.

Ingredients we formulate with. We build balms on a wax framework (beeswax, or candelilla and carnauba for vegan) with butters (shea, cocoa) and emollient oils for glide, plus occlusives for lasting protection. From there we add lip-safe flavour, humectants for “hydrating” claims, vitamin E, lip-safe tints and pigments for tinted balms, and plumping or soothing actives. Every ingredient is chosen on the basis that lip balm is effectively ingested.

Formats and textures. Classic twist-up sticks, pot and jar balms, squeeze-tube gloss-balms, tinted balms, and SPF lip balms (in vegan or beeswax bases). We tune the hardness and melt point to the pack and the climate so the balm applies smoothly without going soft.

The hard parts we solve. Melt point is the classic lip-balm problem. Get it wrong and the product slumps in summer heat or drags on the lips. We engineer the wax-to-oil ratio for the Australian climate, keep flavour stable and lip-safe, disperse tints evenly, and guide the compliant path for any SPF claim (sunscreen claims are regulated in Australia). Fill format (stick versus pot versus tube) shapes the formula too.
